Compassion and Diversity: Applying Compassion-Focused Therapy in Understanding Privilege and Oppression
Discussions around how to address problems faced by diverse populations can be challenging and uncomfortable. This can be particularly true in conversations around issues of privilege and oppression, as even these labels can trigger feelings of threat in participants. However, if we’re going to be able to work effectively with the complex social issues that affect diverse populations, we need to overcome these challenges so that all different groups can commit themselves to facing the problems and collaborating to work toward solutions. In this presentation, we’ll consider privilege and oppression through the lens of compassion-focused therapy (CFT), emphasizing understanding, validation, and healing.
